Grades and Evaluations

Grades

Truckee Meadows Community College uses the following grading system:

• A: superior performance (4 grade points)
• B: above average performance (3 grade points)
• C: average performance (2 grade points)
• D: below average performance (1 grade point)
• F: failure (0 grade points)

Individual faculty members choose whether to use the 'plus' and 'minus' grades. Work may also be graded as Pass/Withdraw or Satisfactory (C or above)/Unsatisfactory (D or below) but carry no grade point value. Grading criteria are included in all class outlines.

Evaluation

ÃÛÑ¿app policy is that each instructor in a regularly scheduled course will be evaluated each semester by the students enrolled in that course. The evaluations are completed online through the Canvas course. These results will be shared with the faculty, but only after grades for the course have been assigned.

Evaluation of Prior Work Experience

It is the policy of the Dietetic Technician Program at ÃÛÑ¿app to not give credit for prior work experience.

Injury or Illness

If an intern becomes ill or injured while in a supervised practice facility contact your preceptor immediately and the Program Director as soon as possible. Upon return to the site the student may be requested to provide a doctor’s excuse stating there are no restrictions for participating in the supervised internship rotation.

Leave of Absence

Program completion must be within 150% of program length. If a student requests a leave of absence for non-academic reasons and the leave is approved, it will be for a total of one year. The student must resume attendance at the beginning of the semester in which the leave was granted and demonstrate continuous enrollment thereafter for completion. Student may be required to be re-evaluated prior to re-entry and re-entry may be dependent on available space; not to exceed class capacity. Approval for re-entry in the program following a leave of absence will not be granted if the student was not in good academic standing prior to leave request.

For protection of student information, including information used to identify students in distance learning please refer to the and ÃÛÑ¿app Information Security. Student information maintained by the Program Director will be stored in a locked cabinet in the director’s office.

Student Complaint Policy

1. Dietetic Technician student complaints should first be directed to the Program Director. If the issue is in regard to the Program Director, then the student can proceed directly to the Dean of the Sciences Division.
2. If the complaint is not resolved, the student has the option to proceed to the Vice President of Academic Affairs.
3. If the complaint is still not resolved, the student has the option to proceed to the President of the College.
4. If a student complaint is not resolved and the issue is in regard to program compliance with accreditation standards, the student may contact the to submit a formal complaint.

Student Performance, Monitoring and Evaluation

Semester Meeting and Advisement

Student performance is monitored each semester by meeting with the Program Director to discuss academic challenges and successes. The meeting provides for the early detection of academic difficulty and must take into consideration professional and ethical behavior and academic integrity. Additionally, faculty can review with the student completed courses and those still needed. As a result, academic advisement can be completed at the same time.

Mid-Internship Evaluation

During each internship rotation the intern will complete a Mid-Internship Evaluation with the program director and preceptor. The intern must schedule a mid-internship evaluation meeting to be held when 75 hours of the internship rotation have been completed. The intern will also provide the preceptor with a blank mid-internship evaluation form for them to fill out when the meeting is schedule. The intern must complete the Mid-Internship Checklist Form and their portion of the Mid-Internship Evaluation Form, which will be provided to the preceptor at the mid-internship evaluation meeting.

Reports: General Guidelines

Student reports of activities meeting each CNDT must be typed. Both the student and preceptor must print and sign the Preceptor Evaluation Form. All signatures should be in blue ink.

Reports are not limited in length. Make sure to include copies of any materials used, including pictures of items that are too big to fit in a binder (such as a poster). Make copies of the original Competency Cover Sheets for record keeping. At the end of each rotation, submit the original signed sheets to the ÃÛÑ¿app professor in a portfolio/binder.

When going to sites, anticipate completing approximately one-third of the total competencies per supervised practice internship.

There are 36 Core Competencies for the Dietetic Technician (CNDT’s). Each competency must be met at least once. It is expected that students will complete many of the competencies more than once (for example, students will do several screenings and assessments, not just one).

Note: CNDT 2.1 has an evaluation form specific to this activity (Supervised Practice Internship Ethics for the Practice of Dietetics Form) and is to be signed by the Program Director.

Reports: Portfolio/Binder Organization

The student should organize each binder in numerical order by CNDT. Include tabs with the CNDT number.

• The cover sheets, reports and evaluations with comments and original signatures should be placed in one binder for each course rotation (NUTR 291, 292 and 293), for a total of three binders submitted.
• Copies of all materials associated with the activities should be included.
• It is the student's responsibility to complete all paperwork and to obtain all necessary signatures.
• It is the student's responsibility to schedule a meeting with the ÃÛÑ¿app professor to review paperwork and receive a grade in the course (satisfactory vs. unsatisfactory).

Student Review of Personal Information

Students have the right to review their files, which are located in the director’s office.

Students Replacing Employee Labor

Students and/or Interns cannot replace employees during supervised practice.

Supervised Practice Internships: Placement Policy and Procedures

1. In order for students to start internships, the following prerequisites must be met (in addition to instructor approval to enroll in NUTR 291, 292 and 293).
   • NUTR 291 prerequisites: CUL 100, NUTR 220 and NUTR 221 with a grade of "C" or better.
   • NUTR 292 prerequisites: NUTR 233 with a grade of "C" or better.
   • NUTR 293 prerequisites: NUTR 243 and 244 with grades of "C" or better.
2. The student must schedule an advising meeting with the Program Director to request placement at least one semester prior to placement.
3. The student shall proceed with submission of proper documentation (immunizations and health insurance). These documents must be received prior to being placed on the internship site schedule.
4. The Director will then proceed with a second student meeting to sign the Code of Conduct and ensure that the Code of Ethics requirement has been met. The student will then be placed on the internship site schedule in the order of priority based on the calendar date when this step has been reached.
5. Upon preparation for internship placement, the student will be given permission to enroll in the course and proceed with scheduling with the site preceptor.

Supervised Practice Internships: Time Log

A supervised practice log must be kept for every day at the supervised practice site. The log is to be done daily during the times that the student is onsite. The log must be included in the portfolio. It may be either typed or neatly handwritten.

The log should include the following:

• Date
• Day
• Time of arrival
• ime of departure
• Brief summary/description of what the student did during each day of the supervised practice.

The hours are validated when the preceptor completes and signs the Preceptor Evaluation Form, which lists the total practice hours for the internship activity. These hours are then confirmed, by the program director, when the total hours on the Preceptor Evaluation Form are corroborated in the Internship Time Log.

The student is required to meet with their ÃÛÑ¿app faculty staff five times per rotation. The first meeting is prior to the beginning of each rotation and is held at ÃÛÑ¿app. The last meeting, typically at ÃÛÑ¿app, is after completion of the internship rotation upon submission of the portfolio for grading.

The other three meetings are held during the completion of required hours and at the rotation site. It is the student’s responsibility to schedule all five meetings. The student must take into consideration the faculty member’s schedule, in addition to their rotation schedule when scheduling all meetings. The student must bring all portfolio activities and/or dietetic competencies materials with them to each meeting.

Verification Statement Requirements
