Addressing Student Well-Being and Behavior

Definition of Child Abuse and Neglect

Nevada law defines several types of child abuse and neglect:

• Physical Injury: a non-accidental injury including bruises, cuts, bite marks, burns and broken bones.
• Mental Injury: an injury to a child's intellectual, psychological or emotional condition causing impairment of a child's normal range of performance or behavior.
• Sexual Abuse or Exploitation: any sexual activity with a child, including fondling and lewdness, or encouraging or allowing a child to view pornographic material or engage in prostitution or pornography.
• Negligent Treatment or Maltreatment: failure to provide a child with proper care, control or supervision, food, education, shelter or medical care.

A parent or guardian is responsible for the abuse or neglect of a child if he or she causes or allows the abuse or neglect. A child is anyone under the age of 18.

Concerned about Student Being Harmed?

Mentee Under 18:

• You are a mandated reporter. If your mentee is under age 18 and you have "reasonable cause to believe" your mentee has been abused or neglected, you are required to report the suspected abuse or neglect to Washoe County Human Services no later than 24 hours after you have received the information.
• Call the 24-hour reporting line for Washoe County Human Services at 775-785-8600.

Mentee Over 18:

• If your mentee is still a high school student: consult with your student’s high school counselor.
• If your mentee is not a high school student: consult with a ÃÛÑ¿app Counselor (775-673-7060).

Notify the mentor coordinator or call 775-673-8236.

Concerned that Student is a Harm to Self or Others?

±õ´ÚÌýyour mentee is still in high school:

• Immediate threat?
  
  • If you are on the high school campus: notify a school official and/or school police.
  • If you are on the ÃÛÑ¿app campus: call 911.
  • After help arrives, notify the student’s high school counselor or principal.
• Not an immediate threat: notify the student’s school counselor or principal.

If your mentee is no longer a high school student:

• Immediate threat: call 911.
• Not an immediate threat: walk the student to the ÃÛÑ¿app Counseling Center (RDMT 325) or call the Counseling Center at 775-673-7060.
• File a student conduct report.

Notify the mentor coordinator or call 775-673-8236.

• Academic Advising: help students explore educational planning, majors, transfer procedures, class selection and other information about the College.
• Career Center: help with resumes, interview skills, job search, internships, etc.
• Counseling Center: free online mental health screening tool, personal counseling, career assessments and counseling, etc.
• Disability Resource Center: accommodations for students with disabilities.
• Distressed Student Protocol: provides information on signs of distressed, ways to respond and resources.
• Student Conduct: student code of conduct, strategies for dealing with disruptive students, process for reporting a student conduct concern.
