Auto Insurance and Vehicle Use Policy

Defensive Driving Training

Employees of the State of Nevada who operate state-owned vehicles are required to complete an initial approved four-hour Defensive Driving Training course and refresher training every four years as outlined by the and the . Truckee Meadows Community College has incorporated the state training requirements into the broader Vehicle Use Policy found on the Auxiliary Services ·É±ð²ú±è²¹²µ±ð.Ìý

Initial training options:

• In-person "Defensive Driving Training" from the ÃÛÑ¿app Environmental Health & Safety Department.
  • Contact the EH&S Department to find locations and times.
• In-person "Four Hour Defensive Driving Course" from other state entities such as the .
• Online "Defensive Driving Course (4-hour)" from the .
  • The NSC course costs approximately $40.00 (small fluctuations in cost occur annually) and should be paid by the employee's department or group.

Refresher training options (every 4 years after initial training):

• Online from Safety National.
  • Contact EH&S Department for log-in information.
• Online from the State of Nevada Online Professional Development Center.
• In-person from the ÃÛÑ¿app Environmental Health & Safety Department.
  • Contact the EH&S Department to schedule training for your department/group; refresher courses are not regularly scheduled.

Certificates of completion:

If employees complete training from any entity other than the Environmental Health & Safety Department, please forward their certificates of completion to the EH&S Department.

Certificates of completion for courses offered by EH&S can be obtained by contacting the EH&S Department.

Employee Work-Related Injury

Please contact the ÃÛÑ¿app Environmental Health and Safety Office if there is a ÃÛÑ¿app employee work-related injury. If it is an emergency, please call 911.

Field Trips

Field trip information, including insurance related to accidents and travel, are listed on the .

´¡ÌýVoluntary Activity Waiver should be completed when applicable; however, when planning a field trip, an activity waiver may not be the only documentation needed.  

Trip planners should review the risks involved in the trip and weigh them against the educational objectives of the trip. Planners should pay special attention to the following situations and contact us for instructions regarding procedures and documentation needed for the trip:

• Alcohol consumption
• Car pools
• Employee use of personal vehicles
• Foreign travel
• Non-ÃÛÑ¿app participants
• Rental cars
• Overnight stays
• Out-of-state travel
• Student drivers
• Worker's compensation coverage for employees/volunteers

Food Trucks

Food trucks require advance steps to be approved for an event at ÃÛÑ¿app.

1. Schedule: Required procedures and forms for scheduling College, non-College and student events (including those involving food trucks) at all ÃÛÑ¿app sites are posted on the Scheduling Office website.
2. Approval: Approval from Auxiliary Services must be obtained. Please contact Auxiliary Services to coordinate this step.
3. Proof of Insurance: To be allowed on ÃÛÑ¿app’s property, the food truck vendor must provide appropriate proof of auto liability, general liability, and worker’s compensation insurance.
   
   • Food trucks pose special event risks including but not limited to auto accidents, fire from food preparation equipment, food poisoning, and slip and fall accidents from spilled food while customers wait in line. Insurance requirements are set by BCN Risk Management and are posted online.
   • Please contact the Budget and Planning Office to determine whether the appropriate documentation is on file. Insurance documents have expiration dates and may have been previously approved for a "one-time only" event. Do not assume insurance documents are still valid, even if a vendor has been to ÃÛÑ¿app previously. 
   • Departments should plan on collecting the required insurance documents at least three weeks before the event.
   • If a vendor does not have the approved documents on file with the ÃÛÑ¿app Budget and Planning Office, two business days before the event, they will not be allowed on ÃÛÑ¿app property.

Foreign Travel

With the exception of Canada and countries with State Department travel restrictions, ÃÛÑ¿app employees traveling on ÃÛÑ¿app business are provided with travel insurance free of charge as indicated on BCN Risk Management's website.

Employees should review this information and obtain an insurance card when the foreign travel request is approved and before embarking on the trip. Login information and an insurance card are available from the ÃÛÑ¿app Budget and Planning Office.

Inventory Changes

Report inventory changes due to accidents, theft and other losses through ÃÛÑ¿app's Auxiliary Services Inventory Manager. Procedures and forms are available online: Auxiliary Services Property Inventory Control.

Scheduling Events

Required procedures and forms for scheduling College, non-College and student events at ÃÛÑ¿app are posted on the Scheduling Office website.

Speaker Contracts and Insurance Requirements

In addition to the Scheduling Office forms and procedures, contracts and additional insurance documentation may be required for the event. For example, if ÃÛÑ¿app is paying for a speaker, a contract will be required, as well as insurance-related documentation.

Student Accidents, Liability Insurance and Student Groups

Procedures regarding student accidents, liability insurance, student groups and related forms are listed on the .

ÃÛÑ¿app does not provide student health insurance; it is recommended that students purchase their own health insurance.

Volunteers

ÃÛÑ¿app departments choosing to utilize volunteers must follow the ÃÛÑ¿app Human Resources guidelines and procedures. More Information »
