Friends & Allies of LGBTQIA+ is wholly committed to guiding faculty, staff and students at Truckee Meadows Community College about the issues of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex, asexual and all persons in these communities.

Through education, advocacy and awareness of LGBTQIA+ issues, the program assists in the active promotion of a climate that is SAFE and welcoming for all members of the ÃÛÑ¿app community. The program, committee members and supporters strive to:

  • Provide Safe Zone training to promote a greater understanding of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning, intersex, asexual communities and beyond;
  • Increase awareness of discrimination and harassment based on LGBTQIA+ people and to educate the community on strategies to effectively confront and report these incidents;
  • Identify issues and concerns and provide recommendations for policies, programs, and initiatives for resolution at ÃÛÑ¿app;
  • Provide student access to allies (and Safe Zone training) for confidential support and resource information in designated locations on campus;
  • Provide access to current LGBTQIA+ resources, educational materials and opportunities to the ÃÛÑ¿app community;
  • Ensure inclusion and equity in concert with ÃÛÑ¿app's diversity strategic goal of "Embracing diversity and inclusion."

Participate

  • Join the Friends & Allies of LGBTQIA+ listserv (FRIENDSALLIESLGBTQ-L) to receive educational and event information on this topic on a regular basis. .
  • Become more involved in awareness of and promoting Safe Zone spaces around the College, and/or become a Safe Zone trainer.
  • Become a Friend and Ally.

Safe Zone Training

Because everyone's experience with diversity is different, Safe Zone training is provided to help individuals and departments become aware of and assist the LGBTQIA+ population in having equal rights and respect within our campus community.

The training also assists individuals in helping LGBTQIA+ people by creating a safe environment in offices, classrooms and across campus. The training is not intended to be the complete collection of every situation or experience that a gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender person may face but helps promote awareness for those with little experience, and encourages open thinking.

It is hoped that those attending the training leave with the following learning objectives met:

  • Ability and willingness to confront social injustices of any kind and provide an environment for optimal learning.
  • Having information and skills to be valuable resources in making people feel valued and safe.
  • Understanding of how the way we interact with the LGBTQIA+ community affects recruitment and retention and persistence of students and faculty.
  • Willingness to take this information and share it with others.

Receive Safe Zone training as an Individual or Department

To receive Safe Zone training for you, an area/department, student club or another ÃÛÑ¿app organization, please contact Alexander Day or Fe Danger to coordinate a training date. ÃÛÑ¿app's Friends & Allies of LGBTQIA+ also collaborates with the Professional Development staff in establishing periodic training dates each semester.
