Eligible Expenses

Governor Guinn Millennium Scholarship is intended to pay tuition for the student. However, in many circumstances (pre-paid tuition, financial aid eligibility) you may receive other funding and will receive a residual check (the amount of all aid that exceeds the charges on the student's account) in the mail. This check is to be used for educational expenses only, including

• Registration fees and laboratory fees and expenses (excluding remedial courses and associated fees);
• Required textbooks and course materials; and
• Other costs directly related to your attendance at ÃÛÑ¿app.

It is recommended that students sign up for direct deposit so that they do not need to wait for checks to come in the mail.

Co-Enrollment

Governor Guinn Millennium Scholarship students enrolled in a degree or certificate program at an eligible institution may request to enroll with Millennium Scholarship support at another eligible institution. A co-enrolled student must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credits between both institutions, and may only be paid for a maximum total of 15 credits between both institutions. Credits taken at the host institution must meet the requirements of the degree the student is pursuing at the home institution.

If a student is taking six credits at ÃÛÑ¿app and six credits at another NSHE community college and has a declared major at both institutions, then the student would complete a co-enrollment form that would need to be filed with either institution.

If a student is attending a university and a community college and is not receiving the full Millennium award at the university, a Governor Guinn Millennium Scholarship may be submitted to the home institution. The home institution is the eligible college/university at which the student is enrolled in a program of study leading to a recognized degree or certificate. The host institution is any eligible institution where a student may be co-enrolled in coursework and the credits will be transferred back to the home institution. Once the co-enrollment form is approved and processed by the home institution, it is forwarded to the host institution. Generally the student would be paid first for the units at the home institution and would then be paid for any remaining eligibility by the host institution.

In either case, the student must satisfactorily complete the credits funded and approved on the co-enrollment form.

Other Financial Aid

All students should apply for other financial aid, however, it is not required that they do so. By completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), they may be able to access other funding in addition to the Millennium Scholarship.

Regaining Eligibility

If the student has lost eligibility for the Governor Guinn Millennium Scholarship after they have matriculated at a Nevada school, following are the steps to regain eligibility:

• Students must be enrolled in a degree seeking program at ÃÛÑ¿app during the semester in which they are reinstating eligibility at ÃÛÑ¿app. Failure to declare a major for the term will make it necessary to complete an additional reinstatement term with a declared major before regaining eligibility.
• Enroll in and complete either 9 credits at a community college, or a minimum of 12 credits at a university, and meet the required 2.75 semester GPA. This enrollment is not funded by the Millennium Scholarship program. Workforce Development and Community Education classes do not count toward the required 9 or 12 credits.
• Each institution sends verification of credits completed and GPA to the Millennium Office at the end of each term.
• If you regain your Millennium Scholarship eligibility during the summer semester, your fall Millennium disbursement will be delayed until October when ÃÛÑ¿app communicates the summer grade information to the Millennium Office and your eligibility status is updated.
• The Millennium Office will send the student a letter notifying them of their reinstatement to the program.
• Millennium Scholars will be able to regain the scholarship only one time after losing eligibility. If a student loses eligibility a second time, the student will no longer be eligible for the Millennium Scholarship. If a student is currently ineligible, he/she will be able to regain his/her scholarship before this provision applies.

The student will not be reimbursed for the term during which they are regaining eligibility.

Disbursement of the Millennium Scholarship

If you have received your information from the Governor Guinn Millennium Scholarship Office regarding your eligibility, congratulations! We are pleased that you have chosen to attend Truckee Meadows Community College. As you know, the Millennium Scholarship will help you pay for expenses while attending ÃÛÑ¿app, as detailed in the Acknowledgment of Award that the Millennium Scholarship Office provided. If you have not received an acknowledgment of award, you may contact the Millennium Scholarship Office directly at 702-486-3383.

The ÃÛÑ¿app Financial Aid office will be responsible for the disbursement of funds to your student account. Should you have any questions regarding your scholarship award, please contact us.

ÃÛÑ¿app will generally apply Millennium Scholarship funds to your student account in mid Aug. for the fall semester and mid Jan. for the spring semester, provided you are enrolled. If no payment has been made by the fee payment deadline, then it is your responsibility to make a payment to ensure your registration is not canceled for non-payment. If you add or drop classes, adjustments to your Millennium award will be made automatically through the end of the 50% refund period. If you add a late-start class after that date and have not already received the maximum award for the semester, please contact us.

Remember that you are not limited to 9 credits at ÃÛÑ¿app. Your Millennium Scholarship will fund $40 per credit for a minimum of 9 credits, up to a maximum of 15 credits per term (you will be responsible for the remaining charge per credit, plus any lab or additional fees that you incur). Remedial courses (those numbered under 100) and continuing education and workforce development classes may not be paid by your Millennium Scholarship funds.

Generally ÃÛÑ¿app is able to automatically identify and award all currently-eligible Millennium students who are enrolled in the minimum 9 credits. However, at times there may be data matching issues. Students who do not have a Millennium award listed on their "Financial Aid Offer Letter" on prior to the first payment deadline of each semester should either make a payment on their student account by the deadline or contact us to rectify the situation.

Please note the following important dates:

Spring

• Mid-January: Millennium funds will begin being applied to your student account: $40/credit, up to 15 credits. If you are enrolled in remedial courses (numbered below 100), you will not receive Millennium funding for those credits; however, remedial credits are counted toward the minimum nine-credit enrollment level. For example, if you are in English 098, Math 096 and History 101, you would receive $120; if you are in English 101, Math 096 and History 101, you would receive $240.
• February 1-12: During this period you will receive a 50% refund from ÃÛÑ¿app for any classes from which you withdraw. The Financial Aid office is required by Millennium rules to return any refunded monies for dropped classes to the Millennium Program, and your award will be adjusted accordingly.
• March 5: Millennium students should pay the portion of their fees that exceeds the amount of their scholarship by the first week of classes. All Millennium students must pay their account in full at Accounting Services or via by 5 p.m. on March 5. Any outstanding balance not paid by March 5 will be assessed a 10% (minimum $10) penalty fee.

Important Information for Summer Session: The Governor Guinn Millennium Scholarship Program is a reimbursement program for Summer only. This means that you would enroll in and pay for your classes on your own, then be reimbursed in October. Unlike Fall and Spring, you only have to take a half credit or a maximum of 15 credits (excluding remedial courses) during Summer to be eligible for Millennium reimbursement. In addition, you must have either received the Millennium Scholarship at an eligible institution the Spring prior, or are already enrolled in the minimum number of credits required for the institution for the following term. You do not need to fill out any forms to be reimbursed; however, you must have declared a major at ÃÛÑ¿app to be eligible. Please check with our office if you do not receive reimbursement by Oct. 1.

Millennium Scholarship Parent Information

As the parent of a Governor Guinn Millennium Scholar, you are probably curious about how the scholarship will work. This page is intended to answer most of the questions that you may have.

Eligibility

Please visit the to find general information regarding eligibility. The important thing to remember is that an application is not required; your student is automatically eligible if they meet the criteria, and they are identified for the Millennium Scholarship as described in the next session. Your student must also declare a major at each Nevada institution where they plan to attend. After that, the student must maintain eligibility by completing the minimum number of credits and maintaining the minimum GPA requirement.

Steps to Receiving the Millennium Scholarship

• Mid to late-June: Nevada school districts send the Millennium Scholarship Office information regarding eligible students.
• Early to mid-July: the Millennium Scholarship Office sends a packet of information to each student, containing an acknowledgment letter that must be signed by the student and returned to the Millennium Scholarship Office. At the same time, the Millennium Scholarship Office sends all Nevada post–secondary institutions information regarding eligible students.
• Late July: newly eligible students who have returned their acknowledgment letter and have enrolled at ÃÛÑ¿app will be awarded the Millennium Scholarship on their MyÃÛÑ¿app.
• Early August: the Millennium award is applied toward the student's account. Fees for which the student is responsible are due to Accounting Services by the posted fee deadline.

FERPA

All post-secondary institutions are bound by the Federal Education Right to Privacy Act (FERPA), which stipulates that information about a student generally may not be released to a third party without the student's signed release. While your student was in high school, FERPA allowed information to be released to you as the parent, but once they matriculate to a post-secondary institution this process changes. If your student would like us to release information to you, they must log into their and manage third party releases.

Dollar Value

The dollar value of the Governor Guinn Millennium Scholarship may seem confusing, but basically, Millennium Scholars receive:

• $40 per credit (excluding remedial courses) up to 15 classes per term at Nevada community colleges, including
  • Truckee Meadows Community College
  • Western Nevada College
  • College of Southern Nevada
• $60 per credit (excluding remedial courses) at Nevada state colleges, including:
  • Great Basin College
  • Nevada State University
• $80 per credit (excluding remedial courses) at any Nevada university, including:
  • University of Nevada, Reno
  • University of Nevada, Las Vegas
  • Sierra Nevada College

Please refer to the website for information specific to the year in which your student graduated. Should your student graduate with a bachelor's degree, or reach the end of their time limit for the Millennium, any remaining funds remain the property of the Nevada State Treasurer and will be used to fund future scholarships.

Nevada Pre–Paid Tuition Program

If your family has enrolled in Nevada's Pre-Paid Tuition Program, that payment will be applied to the student's account first. The Governor Guinn Millennium Scholarship is then applied (in the manner described in the "Steps to Receive" section above). The student will then be given a refund, which is to be used for educational expenses only.

For Summer term only, the Governor Guinn Millennium Scholarship Program is a reimbursement program, which means that the student enrolls in and pays for their classes and are then reimbursed in October, provided the student also received the Millennium Scholarship at another institution (or ÃÛÑ¿app) the preceding Spring or following Fall Semesters.

Unlike Fall and Spring Semesters, students need only take a minimum of a half credit or a maximum of 15 credits (excluding remedial courses) during the Summer to be eligible for Millennium reimbursement.

Millennium Scholars who are full–time students at another Nevada institution may take classes in Summer at ÃÛÑ¿app and be reimbursed, as long as they've declared a major at ÃÛÑ¿app. There are no forms to be reimbursed; however, your student should check with our office if your student does not receive reimbursement by Oct. 1. The ÃÛÑ¿app Financial Aid Office runs reports to identify each eligible student, and we check for enrollment in the Fall or Spring Semesters.
